Bayern made several bids in January – the latest worth up to £35m – but saw their offers knocked back.

He has already agreed a five-year deal with the Blues as Frank Lampard aims to bring in top-level competition for Kepa.

The Special One and the special partnership

When Luka Modric left Tottenham to sign for Real Madrid in the summer of 2012, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy announced a “special partnership” with the Spanish giants.

Levy said he hoped the two clubs would share a “long and productive relationship”, but the benefits of the agreement were never seen in north London. Instead, Gareth Bale followed Modric from White Hart Lane to the Santiago Bernabeu 12 months later.

Seven years down the line, the “partnership” has long been forgotten by most, but those cordial terms may well have helped Spurs in their sensational bid to bring back Bale and also sign left-back Sergio Reguilon.

Jose Mourinho is also likely to have played a pivotal part in the double deal.

“It seems relevant at the moment, we’re hoping it’s not obviously,” he told Sky Sports.

“We want to keep our best players in house that’s for sure. He’s a very good player and he’s delivered for us on a consistent basis over a long period of time.

“I don’t see why the player would want to leave here at the moment in time. If so, I’d imagine that the numbers are considerable for that to even be considered.”

Bale agent: Spurs is where he wants to be

The agent of Gareth Bale has confirmed his desire to re-join Tottenham and revealed talks are ongoing between the club and Real Madrid over a sensational return.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is exploring the possibility of bringing Bale back to north London on loan – seven years after selling him to the Spanish giants for £85million.

It is understood a loan deal is in the pipeline for the 31-year-old but remains dependent on Real paying a sizeable proportion of his reported £600,000-a-week wages.

Despite declaring back in February that the Wales international would be unlikely to return to north London, Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has now claimed he wants to link up with his former club again.

“Gareth still loves Spurs,” Barnett told BBC Sport Wales.

“We are talking [Spurs, Real and Bale’s camp]. It’s where he wants to be.”

ICYMI: Tottenham working on Bale & Reguilon double deal

Tottenham are working on deals to sign Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is exploring the possibility of sensationally bringing Bale back to north London on loan, seven years after selling him to the Spanish giants for a then world-record £85million fee.

It is understood a deal for the 31-year-old is dependent on Real paying a sizeable proportion of his reported £600,000-a-week wages.

Manchester United have also been offered Bale but he is thought to prefer a return to Spurs over a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Levy is driving the move for the Welshman but is determined not to rush, given the numbers involved and complexity of the transfer.

The move for Reguilon is likely to be more straightforward, with the Spanish left-back close to moving to Spurs in a transfer worth around £25million.

The deal is expected to included a buy-back clause and a clause allowing Real Madrid to match any future fee for the for 23-year-old.

Manchester United are also interested in Reguilon but were thought to be unwilling to include the clauses, leaving Spurs in pole position.

Moyes coy on Wilshere future

David Moyes has refused to confirm whether Jack Wilshere will still be a West Ham player by the time the transfer window closes next month.

The Hammers manager made ten changes to the side that lost against Newcastle for the 3-0 victory over Charlton tonight but Wilshere remained absent, the Scot saying the former Arsenal man had rolled his ankle.

When asked about Wilshere’s future Moyes said: “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Fraser nets on Toon debut

It was also a good night for a debutant up at St. James’ Park as Ryan Fraser marked his first competitive appearance for Newcastle with the only goal of the game as they beat Blackburn in the EFL Cup.

The Scot joined on a free transfer after leaving Bournemouth in controversial fashion earlier this summer.

Giroud reveals how close he came to Spurs move

Chelsea striker Oliver Giroud has admitted he was so “determined” to leave the club for first-team football that he nearly joined Tottenham, as well as two Serie A clubs.

The 33-year-old was poised to leave the Blues in January but the move broke down owing to their failure to sign a replacement. Giroud remained at Stamford Bridge, scored six goals under Frank Lampard and penned a new one-year deal.

“During the last three days of the transfer window, I was in the coach’s office to find a solution. I was hoping Chelsea would find a replacement for me,” he told French outlet So Foot.

“For my part, it was not the solutions that were lacking: I almost signed for Lazio, Inter… I was even so determined to leave that I even almost signed for Tottenham!”

Spurs ‘leading Man Utd in Bale chase’

It appears Tottenham are ready to do some serious business in the transfer market after their disappointing Premier League opener against Everton.

According to ESPN, a sensational move to bring Gareth Bale back to north London – seven years after his £85m transfer to Real Madrid – is well underway.

The 31-year-old has been frozen out of the first-team by Zinedine Zidane as the club attempt to offload Bale, who is thought to earn £500,000-a-week at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And while it seems unlikely Spurs would even be able to pay half of those wages, the report claims Tottenham are ahead of Manchester United in the race to bring Bale back to England.
