As the Formula One teams continue their tour of Europe for the revised 2020 season in Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari face what could be a season-defining weekend.
The Scuderia initially feared not being able to compete with Mercedes upon the start of the season in July. Now, they are one of the slowest cars on the grid after finishing outside the points at Spa.
It is almost unthinkable that F1’s longest-running team could qualify last at Monza, the home of the loyal Tifosi, the passionate Ferrari supporters.
With new regulations surrounding the use of different ‘quali modes’ coming into effect, it should soften the blow of Ferrari’s loss of power on the race track.
But with Mercedes in a league of their own at the front, all is not well in Maranello and team principal Mattia Binotto is under pressure to find a solution.
A favourable result for the Italian team would surely ease the burden on Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc.
But only a year after winning this race, they could not be further away from taking the chequered flag at Monza, with rivals Mercedes sure-fire favourites to bring home another one-two.
